About Breast Augmentation & Breast Lift Surgery

Breasts naturally change over time with ageing, weight loss and ageing, pregnancy, hormonal factors, and, of course, gravity. This can result in changing shape and position, loss of fullness and more, depending on genetics and external factors. Many people seek out breast augmentation and breast lift surgery in Australia as a way to restore these effects.

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) and breast lifts (mastopexy) are aimed at reshaping, repositioning and restoring breast volume through the insertion of breast implants and alteration of existing breast tissue. These procedures can be performed in one or two-stage surgeries.

At CosMediTour Australia, our Gold Coast and Sydney plastic surgeons will help guide you on what options are available to you and make a personal recommendation following consultation.

What a Breast Augmentation & Lift May Be Able to Help You With

Before booking in a consultation with our plastic surgeons, our client support team will assess your suitability for breast lift and augmentation in Sydney and the Gold Coast. This may be a suitable option if you are seeking to:

  • Increase breast size.
  • Restore breast volume.
  • Address breast ptosis (sagging) by restoring natural breast ‘perkiness’.
  • Correct asymmetries.
  • Achieve a more rounded shape.
  • Enhance projection.
  • Lift the nipple position.
  • Reduce the size of the areola, if enlarged over time and desired.

To ensure the best possible outcome, our Sydney and Gold Coast plastic surgeons may recommend separating into two-stage procedure. The first surgery is to remove excess tissue and lift the breast, with the implants being inserted and placed during the second surgery. Booking a consultation will help you explore your options and suitability for your own body and expectations.

Breast Augmentation & Lift Recovery

Recovery periods following breast augmentation and lift surgery varies from person to person. At a minimum, we advise our clients to rest for 2 weeks after their procedure, and allow 4 to 6 weeks for recovery. This includes a minimum of 1 week off work — which may be longer depending on your work — and from driving. While healing is an individual process, full recovery generally takes 6 to 9 months, in which time, your implants will settle into their final position. Scarring can take up to 18 months to fade. Explore more information about recovery following breast augmentation and breast lift surgery in our frequently asked questions.

Risks of Breast Augmentation & Lift Surgery in Australia

When considering any surgical procedure, including breast augmentation or breast lift, it’s important to understand there are risks, regardless of the plastic surgeon, hospital and by following recovery protocols. There are risks relating to any type of general and plastic surgery and procedure. We outline these risks in detail on our recovery risks page. Frequently Asked Questions

Breast surgery is a big decision, so it’s natural to have questions. These are some of our most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation and breast lifts in Australia. If you don’t see your questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team at CosMediTour Australia.

What is the recovery time for a breast augmentation and lift?

Most people can generally return to work within 1 to 2 weeks following a breast augmentation and lift. However, your recovery time may vary depending on the work you do and your healing progress. Car travel should also be kept to a minimum for the two weeks post-surgery, with extra care taken with seatbelts. Your surgeon will give you personalised advice based on your circumstances.

How long after a breast augmentation and breast lift until I can workout?

Generally, you will need to wait 8 to 12 weeks post-breast augmentation and breast lift surgery before you can reintroduce arm and chest muscle exercises. High impact aerobic activities, running, jumping or jogging should be avoided until you have completely recovered. It’s important you follow your surgeon’s advice and guidance following your surgery as your recovery may vary depending on your procedure and anatomy, and exercising before you have recovered can affect your surgical results and recovery.

Is breast augmentation and lift painful?

Mild, moderate or sometimes even severe discomfort is considered normal following breast augmentation and lift surgery, but will generally start to ease after 1 to 2 weeks. However, as everyone’s pain threshold is different, it’s not possible to predict exactly how you’ll feel. As with all aspects of your recovery, your surgeon will provide you with personalised advice on pain management and prescribe medication, as required.

How long do breast implants last?

Breast implants typically last 10 to 15 years after initial insertion before needing to be replaced or removed. You should regularly inspect your breasts for signs of any damage, and see your GP or surgeon every 12 months for a review. If you are ever concerned about your breast implants, such as experiencing bleeding, pain, changed sensation, movement of the implants, wrinkling, skin rash or other concerns, it’s important you visit your GP or surgeon as soon as possible for an examination.

Can I breastfeed after a breast augmentation?

While breastfeeding after a breast augmentation is a common concern, most women with breast implants can breastfeed with little-to-no problems at all. The small percentage of women with breast implants who have experienced complications with breastfeeding are generally impacted by the incision site of the implant or the type of surgery they had. It’s important to note, even women without breast implants can have complications with breastfeeding. Read our guide on breastfeeding with implants for more information.

How long does breast augmentation surgery take?

Breast augmentation surgery typically takes around one hour. A breast augmentation and lift may take between 2 to 4 hours. Your surgeon will provide you with personalised advice before your surgery based on your personal situation.

When can I wear an underwire bra after a breast augmentation?

Generally, an underwire bra should not be worn for the first 8 weeks following breast augmentation surgery. In the first 8 weeks post-surgery, you will need to wear a support garment to aid your recovery. Your surgeon will provide you with personalised advice before and after your surgery, including providing you with guidance on wearing a bra.

Do I need a support garment after breast augmentation and breast lift surgery?

Yes, you do need to wear a post-surgery compression support garment for six weeks following breast augmentation and breast lift surgery. Wearing your compression garment is critical for your recovery. It helps aid with the management of swelling and healing of your incisions.

How long do I need off work after breast augmentation and lift surgery?

Most people generally need to take 1 to 2 weeks off work following breast augmentation and lift surgery, depending on the type of work. You may need more time off work following surgery if your job involves strenuous exercise or heavy lifting. Your surgeon will provide you with personalised advice on when you can return to work based on your personal recovery timeline.

How soon after breast augmentation can I drive?

Car travel, including driving, should be kept to a minimum for the initial 2 weeks following breast augmentation surgery. You should take extra care with seatbelts, and sudden or emergency stops wearing a seatbelt can be painful and may cause fresh bleeding. It’s best to consult with your surgeon post-surgery for personalised advice regarding when you can drive based on your own surgery recovery.

Should I wait until after I have children before breast surgery?

It’s a personal choice whether you have breast surgery, such as breast augmentation, before or after you have children. Many of our clients at CosMediTour Australia have breast surgery long before planning for children, while others are seeking a breast lift and augmentation to help restore their breasts after childbirth. Bear in mind, there can be significant changes to your breasts during pregnancy, post-pregnancy and from breastfeeding that can alter the way your natural breasts look.

How long after pregnancy can I have a breast lift?

As a guide, you should wait at least 6 months after breastfeeding to have a breast lift. This allows enough time for the completion of post-pregnancy changes to your breasts, which helps your surgeon to more accurately determine what’s required for your surgery. Weight loss can also impact the results of your surgery, so it’s also worth considering this while making your decision. Your surgeon can help guide you on when to have a breast lift, if this is something you wish to do, following pregnancy based on your personal experience.
