A Breast Reduction is a Plastic Surgery procedure in which excess breast fat, skin, and glandular tissue is removed to reduce the size of large breasts. Unlike many other Breast Surgeries, this procedure is reconstructive by nature. So while cosmetic or aesthetic changes will take place, your Plastic Surgeon will be aiming to more so alleviate your symptoms. These may include:

- Compromised posture due to the weight of the breasts.
- Significant Breast Ptosis (sagging) with nipples that point downwards.
- Asymmetrical breasts, where one may be larger than the other.
- Skin Irritations – including chaffing, rashes and even possibly infections under the breasts.
- Social Discomforts particularly around exercise.
This procedure also includes a Breast Lift to:
- Elevate breast position.
- Reshape and tighten the breast contour.
- Restore the natural cleavage lines.
- Lift the nipple and reduce the size of the areola (if required).

How small can my breasts be after a breast reduction?
Clients can expect to reduce their breasts by 2 to 3 cup sizes as there are limits to the amount of tissue that can be safely removed. Removing too much fat, skin, and glandular tissue places your health at risk. As it may result in an inadequate supply of blood to the nipple and surrounding breast tissue, which can cause permanent damage.
Your safety is our primary concern. As such, its important the clients have realistic expectations about their procedure and understand that it is unlikely you will be able to go from a G Cup to a B Cup.
When is the Best Time for A Breast Reduction?
This is a personal choice. However, because the nipple position and/or size is corrected, Breast Reductions generally carry a higher risk of damage to milk ducts or nerves. This in turn may impact on your ability to breast feed. Because of the increased risk, we recommend waiting until after you have finished breast feeding before undergoing this procedure.
Furthermore, breast tissue can grow back after Reduction surgery. This is particularly the case with weight gain or loss (including through pregnancy and breastfeeding). Because of the risk to the longevity of your results, the best time to have a Breast Reduction is after the breasts have fully developed and when you have reached your goal weight.
Do I Need to Lose Weight Before a Breast Reduction Surgery?
For the best and long-lasting surgical results, we recommend being at your goal weight before your surgery. Losing or gaining weight after your procedure can undo your results or lead to the need for subsequent surgeries.
Your Body Mass Index (BMI) will also be assessed prior to your surgery. We do this for all clients, irrespective of procedure, because a BMI that is too high or too low increases your risk of surgical complications, including infection, slower healing and an extended recovery time.
Breast Reduction Techniques
The surgical techniques used during a Breast Reduction vary according to the amount and type of excess tissue to be removed. The 4 most common surgical techniques are outlined below, each of which are named according to the type of incision required.
Your highly skilled and experienced CosMediTour Plastic Surgeon will tailor their surgical approach to get the best possible outcome for you.
The Anchor Technique
This is the most common technique to reduce size, lift, and reshape the breast contour. This technique is suited to clients with significant levels of excess fat, tissue, and skin. It can also be used to address asymmetry and sagging (ptosis). The Anchor Technique involves an incision around the areola, one vertically from the areola down to the breast crease, and one horizontally along the breast crease.
The Vertical Breast Reduction
Also known as the ‘Lollipop Technique’ this technique is suited to clients with only moderately large breasts. It involves an incision around the arola and another vertically from the areona to the breast crease.
Free Nipple Graft
Also known as the ‘Doughnut Technique’, this technique involves an incision around the areola. Although scarring is minimal with this technique, it is rarely used because the limited amount of tissue that can be removed.
Liposuction
As a standalone surgical technique, Liposuction is better suited to clients requiring a mild Reduction. As such, CosMediTour Plastic Surgeons typically use liposuction in conjunction with the Anchor Technique or a Vertical Breast Reduction to remove stubborn breast fat.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Recovery and healing vary case by case. However, we advise all our Breast Reduction clients to rest for 2 weeks after their surgery and allow 4 – 6 weeks for post-surgery recovery.
Healing is an individual process but a full recovery generally takes place over 6 – 12 months. During this time, your breasts will soften and will look more natural. Scars may take up to 18 months to fade.
