About Meloplasty or Rhytidectomy (Facelift) Surgery
As you age, your skin starts to lose and stops producing as much elastin and collagen, which is why wrinkles begin to form. At the same time, the subcutaneous layer of fat beneath the skin’s surface begins to thin, causing the skin to sag. This begins to accelerate around your mid-40s, which is when many men and women turn to facelifts. Gravity, sun exposure and day-to-day stress can also speed up this process.
A facelift, or Meloplasty or Rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to reduce the signs of ageing by repositioning or removing skin, fat and/or muscle of the face and neck. It’s not a one-size-fits-all surgery with many options and your age, skin elasticity, muscle tone, bone structure and general health all play a part in what your plastic surgeon will recommend and do. Based on these factors, your plastic surgeon may recommend:
- A neck lift, which can help with a double chin, or excessive neck skin, fat or wrinkles.
- A mini facelift, also known as an S lift, which aims to remove excess skin and fat around the lower and middle sections (nose, cheeks and chin) of the face.
- Upper facelift, also known as a forehead lift or brow lift, which aims to remove deep frown lines, wrinkles or excess skin above the eyebrows.
- A full facelift to target the neck, chin, mouth and sides of the mouth.
It’s important to note that facelifts are not intended to address sagging or dropping around the eyes. This is the goal of eyelid surgery, which can be discussed with our team and your plastic surgeon.
What a Facelift May Be Able to Help You With
Facelift surgery aims to help:
- Correct sagging, loose skin on the face and neck.
- Reduce the appearance of deep lines and jowls.
- Restore volume to the face, particularly the cheeks.
- Redefine the chin, jawline and the contour of the neck.
- Tighten and lift the brows.
Your plastic surgeon will work with you to create a plan based on your areas of concerns, aiming to help improve the definition of your facial features.
Facelift Recovery
Your recovery journey following facelift surgery is unique to you, and results may vary from person to person. As a general standard, our plastic surgeons require a minimum of 2 weeks rest after facelift surgery, and 6 weeks for post-surgery recovery. In general, recovery takes place over the 4 to 6 months following surgery, in which time numbness of the face and ears should subside. It’s important to discuss any concerns you may have about your recovery with your plastic surgeon before your surgery.
Risks of A Face Lift Surgery in Australia
It’s important to remember and understand that all plastic surgery carries risks, including facelifts. These risks can occur regardless of the surgeon you choose, the hospital and recovery protocols. Such complications include potential risk of infection, allergic reactions, pain and other associated risks. Learn more about the potential risks of facelift surgery on our recovery risks page.

What To Expect.
Our Facelift Process
Step 1: Enquiry & Assessment
Once you submit your enquiry or call our team, we’ll schedule you in for a phone or video assessment with our client support specialists. This initial step helps you gain initial information and learn if you’re a suitable candidate for facelift surgery. Once your assessment is complete, and if you’re an ideal candidate, we’ll provide you with a personalised surgical recommendation based on your expectations and needs.
Step 2: Surgeon Consultation
Your next step is to meet with your plastic surgeon to begin discussing and planning your facelift surgery. This is where your surgeon will assess your facial structure, fat distribution, skin elasticity, what you’re hoping to achieve and recommend an option based on your personal circumstances.
Step 3: Surgery Day
On your surgery day, you’ll be greeted at one of the Sydney private hospitals we partner with, and guided through what to expect. You’ll be placed under general anaesthetic for the duration of your procedure (2 to 5 hours, depending on your specific surgery). Most people can go home the same day if they are in good health to do so.
Step 4: Recovery
It is normal to feel some mild pain and discomfort in the days following your surgery, however, this varies depending on your pain tolerance. Your surgeon will provide you with any pain medication they feel is necessary, as well as your personalised recovery plans. You’ll be required to be off work for a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks, which will be confirmed by your surgeon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Breast surgery is a big decision, so it’s natural to have questions. These are some of our most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation and breast lifts in Australia. If you don’t see your questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team at CosMediTour Australia.
How long does a facelift last?
While the results from a facelift are long-lasting, they will not prevent your skin from continuing to age. However, you should continue to look younger than if you did not have your procedure, and most people typically do not need revision surgery in the future. Following a healthy lifestyle with a good skincare routine and diet can help you maintain your results from your facelift as long as possible.
What is the best age to have a facelift?
The most common age for people to have a facelift is in their late 40s or early 50s. However, as long as you are in good health, you may be a suitable candidate for facelift surgery into your 60s and 70s. The best age to have a facelift depends on the appearance of your skin and the outcome you are wanting to aim towards. A free consultation is a good place to start to find out if you are a candidate for facelift surgery and what to expect in your journey.
How long will it take to recover from a facelift?
Most facelift patients return to work 2 weeks after surgery and can resume normal activities within 3 weeks. It’s typically recommended you avoid more strenuous activities, like swimming and weight training for at least 6 weeks. However, recovery times vary based on your personal circumstances, including your age, health and the type of facelift you received. Your plastic surgeon will give you a personalised recovery plan based on your specific circumstances.
Will I have scarring after a facelift?
Like any surgery, you will have scarring after a facelift. However, facelift scars can generally be hidden within the natural folds of your skin and hairline. Your plastic surgeon will also use techniques to help minimise scarring, where possible, such as making inconspicuous incisions. If you’re concerned about scarring, a consultation can help you find out more information to make an informed decision.
How painful is a facelift?
Following a facelift, you may experience milk discomfort to more severe pain, depending on your pain threshold. In most cases, bruising, swelling and numbness around the face will fade after the first week, however, in some cases, it can last up to 4 months. Your medical team may prescribe pain medication following your facelift to help alleviate pain or discomfort. As with all aspects of your facelift, your plastic surgeon will provide you with personalised advice on what to expect and how to best manage your recovery.
Can fillers offer the same result as a facelift?
Cosmetic fillers are designed to replace volume, while a facelift aims to smooth the overall skin. While fillers can reduce the appearance of some wrinkles, they cannot elevate sagging skin or reduce the muscle bands on the neck, and the results are not permanent. A facelift helps tighten and lift skin, with long-lasting results.
